Match report

A plucky Hadleigh side welcomed Copdock Dragons, undefeated in the league, on a sizzlingly hot summers morning. The outfield looked quick and dry, but the boundaries were large, so good fielding would be vital. With the nail-bitingly close encounter at Worlington on the artificial wicket still fresh in their minds, Dragons’ eyebrows were raised when the Hadleigh coach strode out purposefully to place the stumps on the astro pitch - more uncomfortable bounce in store for the batters if the bowlers could hit their line and length. As the Dragons’ two main keepers were unavailable for selection, responsibility behind the stumps feel to the novice Pearson. How would he cope with the pace of our bowlers on the artificial wicket? Thankfully, he didn’t disappoint.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Copdock’s opening pair set about Hadleigh’s bowling attack. Sensible batting from Hollis and Lewis with plenty of 1s & 2s and a couple of boundaries, but crucially no wickets lost, got the team off to a great start putting on 34. A slight hiccup from the second pair saw a couple of unfortunate run-outs – a direct hit and a deflection from the bowlers foot - but still a creditable net 13 runs were added to the score. The boundaries started to flow again with pairs 3 & 4 at the crease, Whittle in particular adding an undefeated 23. The scene was set then for ‘finisher’ Froggatt to produce an impressive display of boundary hitting. Parents were pleased that their cars were parked safely beyond the pavilion as the powerful Suffolk opener hit a stunning brace of sixes and several fours to what was almost a full-sized adult boundary.

At the end of the innings, a highly competitive score of 347 was posted. The batters may have been a tad disappointed to have lost 5 wickets, but some good fielding from Hadleigh and help from a pitch with bounce and carry were strong mitigants.

If our batting display was good, our bowling display was excellent. The tone was set by our opening strike bowler Conway, running in strong and hard and pitching the ball up on good to full length. A great wicket maiden followed by an even better double wicket maiden, including a fine catch behind from the agile and athletic Pearson, had Hadleigh reeling after just 3 overs. The pressure was maintained by our first change pair. Toombs almost took a hat-trick in his first over, only denied when the skied ball narrowly avoided the retreating fielder at square leg. 2 more wickets for Cowan in his first over, the 13th of the innings was to put the game well beyond the Hadleigh youngsters. All that remained was for Whittle and the lively Coe to wrap up the innings. After breaking a bail with his first ball (later retrieved, to be framed as a memento, no doubt), Whittle bagged a hat-trick with his first 3 and came very close to a 4th from 4.

Overall, a great performance from the fiery Dragons, but thanks must go out to a brave Hadleigh team. They didn’t give anything away, conceding not a single run-out, and battled to the end.

Man of the match. A close call. Contenders : Froggatt for his power hitting, Whittle for his bail-breaking hat-trick and Conway for his career best bowling figures of 3 overs 2 maidens 6 runs for 5 wickets. But Pearson takes it as a stand-in keeper for giving a great display on a difficult wicket, conceding just 4 byes and taking 2 fantastic catches.
