Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 15 runs

Match report The 'Run' continues !

As I sip on an ice cold rum punch watching the glistening waves of the Caribbean Sea gently kiss the golden sand it seems a good time to reflect on another excellent victory which keeps Copdock in the top half of the Div 4 table.

Hadleigh are always tricky opponents and Saturday was no exception with an opening stand between St Archie and Reuben proving to be the base upon which the win was achieved.

Despite the rain on Friday and in the early hours of Saturday morning it was still something of a surprise to arrive at Hadleigh and find that the pitch we were due to play on was so green it was barely distinguishable from the rest of the square. Apparently water had seeped under the covers onto the original pitch and that was deemed unplayable (although on inspection it did seem a lot drier than the one we were to play on!)

Anyway despite the thoughts of conspiracy theories a good if poorly attended warm up took place lead by Smokin Joe Thomas (Wootton a notable absentee) and spirits among the seconds remained high helped by the returning St Archie and the suntanned Turkish holidaymaker, seasoned old pro East.

Unfortunately the toss was lost and inevitably Copdock we're asked to bat on a pitch which looked like the sort any club cricket bowler would like to roll up and take with them for the season.

St Archie and Reuben walked to the crease with steely determination and produced a superbly gritty opening partnership which took Copdock past the hundred mark in good time. With the seam movement and variable bounce this was a fine effort. After St Archie had passed 50 he was undone by a slow long hop which was acrobatically caught on the square leg boundary. Reuben. Earl of Darwin, also managed to pass 50 soon after, a notable acheivement for Reubs who must have come out in a cold sweat when he saw a leg spinner open the bowling for the home side.
After Reuben departed for a fine 70, runs proved hard to come by against a disciplined bowling and fielding effort with cameos coming from Sugar Ray, Dutch and Wootton. An elegant stroke through square leg for 4 by John Eek got Copdock past 200 and we finished on a useful 206/7.

Unfortunately even towards the end of the Copdock innings it was apparent that the pitch, under a warmish sun, had dried out considerably and was a much more pleasant prospect to bat on.

Copdock began their bowling effort well with Ash striking early, and, after a wayward couple of early overs, Lennox Lewis also found a nice rhythm, removing Milnes caught by the diving, yes diving, Sharpe at short mid wicket. Soon Eek and the Gaukmeister, entered the attack and, as the runs started to dry up for the Hadleigh batters further wickets fell as they tried to increase the scoring rate. Despite the attacking fields being set in order to take further wickets the pitch was starting to become flatter. Ashwin was reintroduced to the attack after a tight spell by Gaukey and he finally broke the deadlock, comprehensively bowling Ambrose and then giving the vocal home support some general words of advice !
Eek had wheeled away for his usual long stint, giving little away, and taking four wickets in the process, however, once his allotted spell had come to an end, he was replaced for the final few overs by Cassius Clay.
Despite Hadleigh hitting a fair number of boundaries in the final few overs as Copdock tried to take the final two wickets with ultra attacking field placings, they were never really in the hunt and ended 15 short with 8 wickets down.

So an fine win achieved against the odds - in previous years Copdock sides have had similar situations and been bowled out cheaply - so a big pat on the back for everyone but mainly St Arch and Reuben.
The day was made even more sweet by the suprising news that East Bergholt had lost heavily so it is still all to play for !
