Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 1st XI v Swardeston on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 11am
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report The first XI lying in 3rd took on the high flying league champions and current leaders on Saturday at the home of cricket ( Old London Road ).

Another fantastic job had been done on the pitch by Martin Taylor and his team which enabled an 11.30am start. Which was incredible work given the weather that had been around.

Swardeston won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Copdock to bat first. Copdock were missing both Tom Rash and Jed Cawkwell, both would be missed in the middle order and Tom would also be missed with the ball.

Copdock lost Essex's Jaik Mickleburgh early on when he was caught at slip. Martyn Cull and Chris Swallow made decent progress before Chris went for 40 with the score on 70-1.

This exposed the young middle order to the strong visitors attack and wickets fell quickly with Felix Ward, Chris Warne, Hugh Thomas and Jonny Rice falling relatively swiftly. Martyn went on to register 50 before being adjudged LBW.

Captain James East and Archie Gravel batting down the order put on 40 or so to take the score towards the 150 mark, before Archie fell attempting to hit over the top.

Copdock's main adjective was then to score 175 and secure two more batting points - they did this off the penultimate ball of the innings and finished 175-9. with James not out 34. A below par score after a decent start.

Swardeston have a long batting line up and it would be an uphill struggle to keep them in check. Although Lambert perished early it became hard work for the bowlers as the pitch flattened out.

Matt Wareing bowled well after tea and picked up 3 good wickets as Copdock again gave Swardeston a scare. Chris Swallow bowled well as always and picked up a couple of wickets.

Swardeston got there losing six wickets and continued their serene progress to another league title. A slightly disappointing result for Copdock as we have given them a good game 3 times in the last 4 without getting over the line.

However all that said it was a good experience for the younger squad members to taste Premier league cricket.

P.s - I should bat higher!
