Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Under 13 Dragons v Worlington on Wed 01 May 2013 at 6.00
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 26 runs

Match report Copdock lost the toss and were put into bat.

The batting strategy taken into the game was for James and Joe to open with James playing his natural aggressive role and Jo to hold his end but still try to score where possible. A strong Middle order (3 to 7) would seek to build on the opening partnership. The batsmen would look to play aggressively pushing hard and looking for converting singles into two’s wherever possible. The score to aim for would be 125+ (just over 6 an over)

Batting first Copdock score 139 for 2 from 20 overs at 6.95 r.p.o. Three batsmen ended the innings not out – Noah (31), Jacob (20) and Oscar (10). Joe also scored a respectable 25 before being c&b by one of Worlington’s County players.

The innings went pretty much to plan, although the fall of the first wicket at 15-1 in the third over saw some of the batting momentum lost between overs 3 & 10 as Copdock were held to 42-1 at 4.20 r.p.o.

Needing to build more scoring pressure and with plenty of wickets in hand, Noah and Joe were passed messages to go on the aggressive, Noah taking quite a bit of the strike to race up to 31* which brought Jacob to the crease. The middle order with 6 overs to go were given licence to attack everything which they duly did pushing the run rate up to nearly 7 an over.

The umpire’s had agreed before the game to be very lenient on wides – had they been in play the extras total would have been much higher, probably somewhere in the region of another 20 runs.

The fielding strategy was relatively simple, try to restrict Worlington to under 5 an over. Noah set a strong field, with sweepers on the boundary at Deep Cover and providing cover behind the wicket at fine leg to compensate for short boundaries behind and in front of the wickets. With quite a good score in hand it was agreed to bowl in bursts of two overs and in pairs and to try and give everyone who wanted to bowl an opportunity to do so.

Despite an early run out by Sam and two quick wickets in row (LBW from Henry and Bowled by Oscar) Worlington had got off to a pretty good start and by the tenth over were 66-3, way ahead of the same place Copdock had been at the same stage.

Overs 11-17 carried on in much the same vein with Worlington managing to find boundaries every over which brought the scores closer and closer. With three overs to go Worlington were 110 for 5 needing 30 to win – a tall order, but very do-able if panic crept into the bowling attack. Up stepped Sam W to bowl 2 overs for 1 run and Edward Lloyd his final over for only 1 run which secured a very respectable win by 26 runs.
