Match report Scoobies win again

A comfortable victory by a Nelsonian margin of 111 runs against second in the table Great Bromley sees them continue their rise up the Div 4 table.

A full report follows from our roving reporter at the game, J Cuff.

My cricket career albeit blighted by a restriction on ability has stumbled across a new dawn under the captaincy of Graham Underwood. There is a real sense of ambition about the man who is potentially leading us gallantly into a place we haven’t been for some time!
On Saturday we travelled to Gt Bromley where we were to take on opposition with similar ambition. A beautiful hot sunny day in Essex in a picturesque setting is all cricketers of our standard can really ask for.
Underwood won the toss and thankfully we were allowed to bat first. With Hugh Thomas and Rueben Sharp opening up, we sat back to watch some hard clean hitting. Hugh showed his class (particularly in Div 4). He raced the score on with some straight driving, straight from my manual (Chapt 6 – hard hitting). The pace was not quite quick enough for Reuben and when one shot up at him off a length he thought it unfair. When out for 10, he explained how he thought the ground was crap and that Gt Bromley should be banned from existence in the cricketing world. Reuben, life without you wouldn’t be the same. Anyway Hugh fell for 78 after limp wristing one to extra cover. Jonny Rice took to the wicket. By his own admission he could hardly hit it off the square. I think he needs a good meat pudden. He did nudge a good 46 not out; whilst at the other end the ginger ninger Martin Holland hit a decent 53. Together we accumulated a total of 254 for 5.
Both Adam Baker and I were quite disgruntled at not being considered for a batting slot higher than 7 and 8 respectively. This lead to a quietly composed skype call with Toby Allerton who took very little encouragement to identify an undetectable deposition sight! Toby was also concerned by a sighting of Kevin Banham. Apparently Kevin or someone else with a particular resemblance to Nicholas Lindhurst was seen staggering along Woodbridge Town high street singing songs about goblins??
Following the tea interval we took to the field. Hugh opened the bowling from the top end and Graham the other. A slightly wayward start from the bowlers saw one moment of hilarity. Hugh got one to pop, and Gt Bromley’s opener bat handled it to point. It flew sharply to Adam Baker who advanced confidently towards the ball to take what for his standards would have been an easy catch. Instead the ball slid through his hands and almost knocked his teeth out. I did giggle….. quietly.
We did however take timely wickets, and as Hugh settled into his rhythm he looked a continual danger as he beat the bat on numerous occasions. He accounted for danger man Nasir who edged one to Underwood in the slips. Following Underwoods opening burst of 8 overs, Steve Gauke was given the opportunity to shine and shine he did. I stood at long off and watched our very own Honey Monster as he bowled 10 overs taking 4 wkts for 20 runs. Top effort!
The highlight for me has to be however the smart diving catch by young Sam Handley at point to dismiss the opposition skipper Lawson. Sam who sets his standards high and has great ambitions at the club also bowled well to take 2 wkts. A legend in the making with great support from his family.
We went onto win comfortably by 111 runs. A well deserved victory and cool beer!
