Match report A thrilling match at Frinton. With a depleated team a number of people stepped up including James Burch making his first team debut as keeper. Not only zero byes, and one stumping but a valuable 8 on a difficult pitch. Man of the match must go to James East who took 5 wickets for 49 but also scorred a winning 46 from 120 balls. Comming in at 48 for 5 James batted through to win the game. Mention of John East should also be made as he took 4 wickets and a 31 run stand with his brother, including a memorable 6 back over the bowlers head helped masively to the win. Finaly J Druitt came in at 11, faced 17 balls to score 4 in the winning last man stand, with the winning run on the 3rd ball of the last over. The unbeaton run continues !!

Alternative Match Report.

Copdock turned up weak, young and hungover. Vicious rumours of infighting between members from the night before gripped the morning papers. James East stepping in as captain, won the toss and inexplicably bowled, after Copdock’s recent jittery chases, the deck looked flat and a few players wanted a lie down. Thomas, sponsored by British Gas, was disappointed when wasn’t given the new ball, on his sponsors day, who hired out the Pat Patel Grandstand at Frinton. Jenkin was the preferred bidder, who after a couple of overs tweaked a calf, curiously it wasn’t enough to stop bowling, alas it was enough to mean he couldn’t stop, Thomas is still looking for answers. It was a chance Thomas will rarely get, with Gravell on his deathbed and Jed looking increasingly immobile in the field, lending credence to the theory he doesn’t have vertebrae, moreover one long back bone, and would be unable to bowl.

Most curiously though, James East bowled a couple of maidens at Moulton, who has never scored under 183, when facing east, striking his bat, elbow, chest and foot, before striking the stumps at the pace of a John East off break. Some little South African looked like a foal on roller skates to Jenkins skidders, but some how survived long enough to see off Jenkin, before missing an East straight break. Comical scenes around drinks as Jones swapped his bat 13 times, before missing a straight one, and East also had the Sri Lankan overseas keeper caught and bowled, no need to appeal there. Foakes slapped a half volley to point and East had somehow got 4fer, to his joy the worst player in the league came out to bat and nicked one to his brother, somehow, somehow, James had five. He wanted 9, so he could send James Holmes a text. It didn’t last so long when Captain Mainwaring did not panic, nor did he tell anyone their name, Pike. John East bowled, very very very slowly and picked up 4, Dan Vettori 1 and Jenkin went wicketless, much to Thomas’ amusement, 129 a/o knock them off pop home in time for tea, it couldn’t be any easier…

Reuben Sharpe looked in prime form pulling the seamers through point, majestic, the crusaders were cruising to Jerusalem, until Sharpe kicked a straight one, and Rice faced his first ball from Lawes, in a position akin to Usain Bolt at the start of a race. As the ball was released he was nearer the bowler than the ‘keeper and proceded to chip it to mid off, oh ricey. Burch, Thomas and Cawkwell came and went like India’s top order, 45-5. Hugo Gravell pushed Tom Davey close for the longest 0 on record, alas Davey was safe, that record will take some beating. Jenkin choked 78-7. Comments at the start of the day were that it was a good chance for someone new to contribute, alas it was left to the old stagers full of age, experience and wrinkles to see the ‘Dock home. They put on thirty or so, with John smiting Moulton over his head twice, elegant, majestic, thumped.

As Copdock got closer, the more stressful it got, until John East, Off spinner and educated man, threw revolt to society in the cricketing equivalent of looting Halfords, he played a cut shot to an off spinner, “no!” I hear you cry, “why?” are irrelevant questions, the fact is he did, Mark Burch still hasn’t quite recovered.

James Burch came out and majestically drove against the spin through cover and leg glanced to settle in, but it was one nudge too many, LBW Stubbs, the Home Guard strikes with their broomstick rifles. Druitt came in with everyone else’s kit on, and produced a plethora of methods to prevent the ball hitting his stumps. 18 still needed the pair chipped away at the runs required, luckily the crusaders were given 2 extra overs and used them. Needing 4 off the last, two singles off the first two balls, left heroin(e) East finished the job though a characteristic jab through point. Copdock happy, Frinton were less so. East played a crucial role, in winding up Frinton so much that they stopped concentrating on bowling and Jones reverted to type as a primitive cave dweller.
