Copford v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 25 Jul 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 34 runs

Match report Despite the absence of regular captain Hugh Thomas, a star studded team made the trip to Copford for this crucial PDQ fixture. Having successfully hidden from Brooksy on Saturday, James East decided he could hide behind the tree if needed and was the first to confirm his availability. This example was followed by Sharpe (looking to improve his all time PDQ average of 15), Swallow (looking to rediscover his batting form), and Archie (still looking to find himself).

So, with the strongest batting line up we have probably ever had in this competition, Copdock were not unhappy to have been inserted albeit on an “interesting” looking track... Unfortunately the inevitable happened and after 10 overs we were 29 for 5!! With Sharpe (3), Burch (1), Swallow (3), East (0), Crame (4) all back in the pavilion it would be fair to say we were struggling....

But, the next 20 odd overs were a joy to watch. Having survived where all his colleagues had failed Archie began playing with more and more confidence and soon started scoring freely. His 67 was an absolutely vital innings and it really does look like he is full of runs once again. I expect considerable activity in the fantasy league transfer market this week... Tom Davey was simply awesome. Severe on any loose deliveries he quickly got the scoreboard ticking and the two of them put on a brilliant 160 odd run partnership. Tom was run out off the last ball of our innings for a superb 97 and was desperately unlucky not to make a hundred – if he had not insisted on smashing every pull shot directly into the tree and playing every drive with one hand he would easily have got brought up the 3 figures!!!

The Gravell / Davey partnership provided excellent entertainment, matched only be Nose’s insistence that he could master the Swallow introduced, Derek Randall inspired, bat and ball juggling challenge – 2 on the face, 2 on either edge, 2 on the toe, 2 on the handle. Not an easy thing to do but credit to Nose after an hour’s solid practice he did get it....I feel a letter coming on!!

So, thanks to Tom and Archie we reached 218 off our 40 overs and were feeling pretty confident at tea. Despite getting off to a bit of a flier Nose and Mr G soon pulled things back and Copford were never able to keep up with the run rate. Pidge inevitably put the squeeze on and was well supported by Gauke and Archie Gravell. We kept taking wickets at regular intervals and although James Bell carried his bat for the home team they ultimately fell 34 runs short and never really looked like threatening our total.

A comfortable win in the end, but we may well look back at the Gravell/Davey partnership at the end of the season as the key factor in us avoiding relegation. Well done guys...!!
