Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Earls Colne on Sat 04 Sep 2010 at 12.30pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report Well, we made pretty hard work of it but ultimately gained a very satisfying win over Earls Colne. Largely because they fielded an ineligible player against us we lost to the relegation doomed team early in the season so were determined to put things right this time round.

On another excellent Copdock track we won the toss and elected to bat. However, with Jamie out first ball and Sogwag soon following it was left to Mark Burch and Adam Baker to rebuild the innings. They had no choice other than to consolidate and consequently the run rate never got much above 3 for the first 30 overs or so. When Burchy was eventually bowled trying to push things on a little, Shorten strode to the crease looking like a man determined to dominate. Unfortunately three balls later he strode back from the crease looking like a man determined to mark out a football pitch!!

Banham’s return to the side has been a welcome bonus at the end of the season and he went about compiling an excellent, quickfire 49. Sweeping almost every other ball his innings was vital in giving the innings some momentum. Wootton, Druitt and Underwood all fell cheaply in the search for quick runs and at one point it looked like we might even give Earls Colne some overs. However, Gauke and James Wheaton batted sensibly to ensure this did not happen before Gauke managed to take 16 off the last over to push the Copdock score up to 178. To be honest, this looked well below par but we knew the opposition were a poor team and were confident if we bowled well we could make things very tough for them.

This is exactly what happened. Soggy took a wicket with his first ball and Underwood produced a superb opening spell of 14-4-32-2 (he has now taken 35 wickets this season). Sharing 5 wickets between them, Drezza also kept things tight and was ably supported by Banham. With the dangerous Earls Colne “giraffe” at the crease the opposition always remained in the game but when Soggy dismissed him in his first comeback over the game was pretty much settled. In the end the good guys won by a relatively comfortable 20 runs.

So, one game left this season and the pleasing prospect of sending IES down awaits us.... Roll on Chantry Park!!
