Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Maldon II on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 52 runs

Match report An excellent performance with bat, ball and in the field ensured a second consecutive convincing winning for the 2s.

Having won the toss again Copdock opted to bat first, but soon found themselves in trouble as the Maldon duo produced excellent opening spells. Taylor and Burch were both dismissed caught and bowled early and at 13 for 2 off 10 overs things were looking very dodgy!! However, the next 35 overs were all Copdocks...!!

Jamie Green and Adam Baker put on a fabulous 107 third wicket partnership in a perfect example of how to play limited overs cricket. Firstly they consolidated the innings and saw off the opening attack, they then scored freely of the change bowlers, before completely dominating the attack in the latter overs. Despite, Jamie eventually being dismissed for an excellent 62 (his 4th 50 of the season for the 2s!!) and Cuff going cheaply the run rate continued to grow as the bowling became more and more erratic. Playing his first game for 5 or 6 weeks Scott Wootton (31 not out) proved to be an excellent partner to Teddy Baker who by this time was proving almost impossible to bowl at. He started his innings by nudging and nerdling and finished it smashing it everywhere!! It really was a brilliant knock and it was great to see him reach the magic 3 figures. Ted was finally out for 109 but his partnerships with Jamie and then Scott had led Copdock to an imposing 239 at tea.

As ever the pitch was good, albeit a little worn, and the feeling was that although this was probably an above par total we would need to bowl and field well to guarantee victory – particularly as our bowling resources were a little thin!!! Fortunately, this is exactly what we did. The ever vocal Hugh Thomas (unable to play in the ones due to a side strain sustained pretending to be Malcolm Marshall at nets!!) kept everyone going and the team looked impressively sharp in the field. Underwood and Taylor took the new ball and both bowled well, ensuring Maldon fell behind the required run rate early on. It was then down to the spin duo of Gauke and Druitt to continue to keep things tight. This they did well, and as the run rate grew wickets inevitably fell. Bowling 28 overs in tandem, they took 3 wickets apiece and ultimately Maldon fell well short of the required total.

This was another good victory for the 2nds and we slowly fighting our way up the table. Exning away will be another tough game next week but the momentum is definitely with us and if we continue to play like this another win is definitely on the cards...
