Stowmarket v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 62 runs

Match report The 2nd XI returned to form this week with a convincing victory over the league leaders.

On one of the hottest days of the summer so far Copdock won a crucial toss and inevitably chose to bat. Sogwag hit the first ball of the innings for 4 and the tone was set...!! He looked in fine form before being controversially adjudged LBW. Oliver Gravell had volunteered to start the umpiring but insisted he would have to be relieved when son Hugo came in – clearly he did not fancy standing in the sun for very long as it was he who gave Soggy out. “Hitting middle half way up” insisted Mr G, “swinging down the leg side” grumbled Soggy. Unfortunately Hawkeye was unavailable so we will never know for sure, but I certainly wish everyone who umpired in Div 4 was as honest as we are...

Anyway, with Sogs gone early is was left to Jamie Green, Ted Baker and then Hugo Gravell to lay the foundation for our innings. They all batted superbly with Jamie in particular excelling. Severe on any loose deliveries he never looked in trouble and scored at a good rate throughout his innings. It was a brilliant knock and he was desperately unlucky not to reach his first senior hundred for Copdock. He was finally dismissed for 95 and the £100 his dad has promised him for getting to the magic 3 figures will have to wait until another week. However, there is no doubt Jamie will be collecting this money very soon!!

The top order ensured we scored at a healthy rate throughout the innings, but it was the combination of Cuff and Shorten in the final few overs that really took the game away from Stowmarket. It would be fair to say Shorts went berserk – he smashed 52 in no time. His innings included 7 “4’s”, 1 “6” and at least 3 reverse sweeps!! It was great to see him return to form. Cuff also hit one out of the middle.

We were pretty happy with 277 at tea, especially knowing that Stowmarket were missing a couple of their frontline batsmen. Nonetheless, they have scored a stackful of runs this season, their pro has been in great form and we were very aware we would have to bowl and field well. Fortunately, this is exactly what we did - the experienced pair of Gravell and Underwood setting the perfect example. They gave absolutely nothing away and scoreboard pressure soon started to mount. The combination then combined perfectly when Oliver held onto a good catch of Underwood’s bowling to dismiss the pro. This was a big moment in the match and despite a typically aggressive innings from the Stowmarket captain the required run rate continue to grow. With Oliver on the verge of collapse he was replced with Druitt who also bowled exceptionally well. With Underwood completing 15 excellent overs and wickets starting to tumble a Copdock victory was assured.

Despite setting very attacking fields in the last few overs in an attempt to gain an extra bonus point, we still won by a convincing 62 runs. This was a great performance and exactly what we needed at this point of the season. With the likes of Banham, Wootton, Catchpole and Burch all to come back into the team things are looking good for the 2nd half of the season. The futures bright the futures Green....
