Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 78 runs

Match report Mildenhall Away

This game may well go down in the annals of Copdock’s cricketing history as the day Archie Gravell stepped out of Reuben Sharpe’s shadow as NOT the worst catcher in the side. He caught one, just, at deep backward square leg. Hugo was very proud. Hugo in turn took his first team average over the 40 mark ( having refused to play any shots in the last over ) and now tops both the first and second team averages. Lies, damn lies and statistics!

The side warmed up with the Oldies ( including Thomas, I think that made him feel a bit ill ) taking the youngsters to the cleaners again. Although this was spoilt slightly by a reckless and poorly timed challenge from Hugo on Nose. Uncalled for and unwelcomed.

Copdock won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions on a green seamer against the quickest opening partnership in the league. This turned out to be a good decision as it made the batters concentrate for a change.

Archie and Sasha ( no holiday ) opened up and moved along serenely at 4 an over although both had scares against the pace of Mills, who when he gets it right is pretty sharp. Sasha was first to go for 20, caught at slip. He looked very good and needs to push on for that big score we know he has in him! Archie and Popey batted well too and Archie got 40 and Pope 30 before they were both out chasing either very high or very wide ones !!

Pidge and Nelly kept things moving nicely, which is what they should do every week and Ashwin and Hugh did the same as the overs ran out. Nose got hit in the hand, but showed no pain!!! Pidge finished with a well crafted 64 and the side on 223 for 7.

Copdock thought 220 would be a decent score whilst they were batting, so were pleased with the effort.

Mildenhall started with a blaze and both left handers threw everything at any width! Ethan got a bit of tap, but will be stronger for the experience. ( we’ve all been there ).

Nose took 2 wickets in his 3rd over and both openers were gone! However Mildenhall continued to pressure Copdock and with a strong wide blowing one end it was hard for copdock to fit both spinners into the attack at once!

Pidge bowled superbly and supported occasionally by Nose, with the odd good over, in between some nose so good ones, pressure was turned onto Mildenhall!

Nelly was introduced into the attack with 12 overs left and the opposition just imploded, in a similar vain to India against Michael Clarke. Nelly took 5 wickets for 4 runs in 3.5 overs. Game over! Which was a blessing as due to Mildenhalls over rate, if we had to bowl 50 overs, we’d have finished Sunday morning!!!

All in all..... Pidge batted well, it had to happen eventually. We did well as a batting unit... Which was pleasing. We fielded well, back to expected standards. We bowled pretty badly, however, with no game for a week or so and a strong wind... almost acceptable.

The future’s bright... the future’s copdock....

Oh... and Hugh kept very well... great catch standing up to Nelly!!!
